Which diet is best?

WHAT’S THE BEST DIET?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Paleo? Vegan? Keto? Pegan? I get asked this a lot and honestly my answer is usually the same as most answers in nutrition… ‘it depends’. As humans we are all so biochemically and genetically unique there cannot possibly be ONE diet to suit everyone. Then take goals into account – do you want to loose weight? Feel energised? Disease prevention or management? Are you an athlete? Is it for #gains? Add in ethical reasons and sustainability and you’ve got yet another tasty layer of diet decisions.

There is one thing all good diets do have in common though and that is that they are high in PLANTS. And not just spinach every damn day but a variety of seasonal and colourful plants. So many people say ‘I switched to *enter diet name* and I feel / look amazing!’ which is great but in reality they just upped their plant game. A focus on plants often means you crowd out all the other crap that is doing nothing for you or at worst damaging you.

For me, right now (as diets are and should be fluid and flexible depending on your life) I don’t claim to be on any diet. But what I do think is important is conscious eating – thinking about each ingredient you chose, where it’s from and why you need it. For 3 times a day every day we use food not just as fuel and function for our bodies but as a source of enjoyment, social interaction & routine. But so many of us are mindlessly shovelling food into our mouths, feeling guilty about what we’re eating or dancing the old grab-and-go that we’re forgetting the importance and value of each choice we make.

It comes down to the saying ‘Know Thyself’ – listen to your body and what it needs (or doesn’t need). Nourish it with variety and quality. What types of movement suit you the best? What foods don’t suit you? What habits do you have? How much sleep do I need? Know these things and consider how to care for the world around you then tailor your personal diet around it.

Over the next month I’ll post a series of diet breakdowns, the good points and bad, so you can choose one that’s right for you. What diet do you follow or want to know more about?
